An angry mob have reportedly set ablaze a man after being accusihim of stealing a motorcycle in Otukpo, Benue State.
It was disclosed that the incident happened at the prominent Otukpo main roundabout on Tue, Nov. 7, 2023.
The suspect was said to be from Odejo in the Agatu Local Government Area of the Benue State.
According to one of the eyewitnesses, identified as Sunday Abah, the suspect had allegedly stolen the said motorcycle from its owner outside Otukpo main market but unfortunately he was later caught when the stolen bike ran out of fuel.
The mob reportedly subjected the suspect to a very severe beating before they set him on fire.
Mr. Abah in his statement says:
“A young man was cremated and incinerated for stealing a bike yesterday in Otukpo. The thief was said to have stolen the bike outside Otukpo main market when he carefully observed that the owner packed it and went to the market,”
“The owner returned a few minutes only to discover his bike was stolen, and he quickly alerted the original owner of the bike. The man went and mounted road at Adoka road where they normally cross to Agatu to sell their booties.
“It was at this juncture, he saw the thief pushing the bike when he exhausted the fuel in the tank, he was looking for black market, then the owner caught him, and led him straight to a crematorium at Otukpo/Enugu round about, where he was given a jungle justice.
“In as much as it’s illegal to take someone’s life, it’s also bad and pitiable to steal something some body suffer to buy. Most of these bikes are bought on hire purchase about 700 to 800k, and you want to steal it cheaply so the man who labored under the sun can go to hell? The thief has seen the hell.”
